The Core Fitness Course is not a certifying course. It is a pre-requisite for attendance at one of the certifying courses. An instructor must already have the Fitness Instructor Certification to attend the Personal Trainer course. The FISAF certification criteria require that the student pass a theory and practical assessment for the chosen certifying courses. Certification is available in four categories:

1. Fitness Instructor

Have the required competencies to perform a basic fitness assessment, prescribe exercise programs and provide the correct instructional techniques for strength, flexibility and cardiovascular activities.

2. Aerobics & Group Fitness

Have the required competencies to plan and instruct an exercise to music class of the appropriate intensity and complexity as dictated by the class description and attending participants.

3. Aqua Instructor

Have the required competencies to plan and instruct an aquatic exercise class of the appropriate intensity and complexity as dictated by the class description and attending participants.

4. Personal Trainer

Have the required competencies to perform fitness assessments and needs analysis, prescribe exercise programs, provide correct instructional techniques and modifications for special populations for activities in strength, flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning in a range of personal training environments.

Modes of Assessment

FISAF requires that the student demonstrate competency in accordance with a prescribed set of performance criteria. The performance criteria will involve assessing a person’s level of understanding and performance of skills. The context of the performance criteria will lend itself to a theoretical and practical assessment. As knowledge and skills are used simultaneously in the workplace, an integrated assessment can involve using more than one assessment tool as follows:

· Theory assessment (open or closed book and/or take home)

· Home study projects, tasks, case studies

· Practical assessment (via video or in-person)

· Critiques and reports

· Practicums

A theory and practical exam is the minimum requirement for FISAF certification
